Christ is Risen!

He is Risen indeed! Alleluia!

What an incredible statement. Jesus, that guy we saw hanged on a cross just a few days ago is alive! What could this possibly mean?

It means so many things. For starters, all those lessons he taught, all those miracles he performed, all those changes he sought to bring about in our hearts, they all pointed to this! The power of life in God through Christ has vanquished sin and death forevermore! It means that we do not have to fear death, pain, or isolation from God. Instead, we are connected through Christ’s connection to God.

What does this mean?

It means we are Easter people! The world is a difficult place. We live in the midst of broken relationships, hurting people, a creation that cries out for justice, and systems that simply do not reinforce the Goodness with which God created the world. In shorthand, this reality is called “sin.” Everything that keeps us away from true relationship with God, neighbor, and creation tarnishes our souls.

AND YET, Jesus (God among us) entered into this quagmire of messiness and showed us a different way. This is what it means to be Easter people: to live in the mission of Christ each and every day of our lives. To heal broken relationships where we can. To listen to people’s pain, speak words of comfort, and take action to alleviate that pain. To see the realities of animals and habitats degrading around us and working to stop the damage and restore what has been hurt. To truly take stock of ourselves and our society, see where we have fallen short of the glory of God, and make substantive change. And finally, to know that we can only begin this work, and acknowledge that it is God who sustains life-giving change in us and our fellows.

Easter means changing everything we thought we knew about how the world works. It is a paradigm shift beyond all others. There’s simply no coming back from death. Yet we have God that has overcome even the power of death. What else can we overcome when we align ourselves to the will that God shows in a bloody cross, an empty tomb, and a risen Christ?

That is up to you and God to decide.

Amen!

Hello all!

Kelsey, Kathryn, Katrina, and I will be at Holden Village for a Confirmation Retreat this coming weekend, May 18-20. Thanks to all your fundraising efforts, this trip has been completely paid for! Thank you!

Since we will be out of cell reception, I have asked Pastor Ladd Bjorneby to be available in case of Pastoral Emergencies. Please contact the church office or Pastor Ladd (509) 928-0626 if needs arise while we are gone.

For Pentecost Worship, Retired Pastor Bob Chenault will be leading worship, preaching, and presiding over communion. Please thank him for his great willingness to help with coverage!

I look forward to seeing you all Memorial Day Weekend, where we will share what our experience at Holden was like!
